Burkina Faso is a country in West Africa. The official language in Burkina Faso is French.
The education system in Burkina Faso is structured as follows
- Basic education
- Secondary education
- Higher education
Basic education
Basic education is divided into formal basic education and non-formal basic education. It is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 13.
Formal basic education has three levels:
- The first level is pre-school education from 3 to 6 years. This level has three sections. The first level is pre-school education from 3 to 6 years of age. This level has three sections: the petite section for three to four year olds, the moyenne section for four to five year olds and the grande section for five to six year olds.
- The second level is primary education from 6 to 12 years. It is sanctioned by the Certificate of Primary Studies (CEP).
- The third level is post-primary education from 12 to 16 years of age and is sanctioned by the Brevet d'études du premier cycle (BEPC).
Non-formal basic education includes:
- literacy and development training for people over 15 who learn to read and count in one of the main national languages
- Non-formal basic education for young people and adolescents and alternative forms of non-formal basic education. It takes care of children aged 9 to 15 who are out of school or not in school by giving them access to a complete cycle of basic education with a practical and professional focus in the national languages, combined with the learning of French, for up to four years.
Secondary education
Secondary education is sanctioned by the baccalaureate which gives access to higher education.
Secondary education is divided into:
- general secondary education, which has a single cycle of three years and leads to the baccalaureate diploma in the A, C, D, E and F series, as desired.
- technological secondary education which has a single cycle of three years and leads to the baccalaureate diploma in the E, F, G and H series
- vocational secondary education or technical and vocational secondary education (ESTP). It includes the CAP cycle (CEP + 4 years), the BEP cycle (BEPC or CAP + 2 years) and the Baccalauréat professionnel cycle (BEP + 2 years).
